Jim Furley was raised in southern Wisconsin on the Rock River. The Rock flows through Wisconsin as it works its way through Illinois to the Mississippi River. From an early age, Jim developed a love for these natural waterways and the great outdoors.
Whether it be snapping pictures from country back roads, chasing trout in the Driftless area, fishing for walleyes and pike or tending his vegetable gardens, there is hardly an outdoor activity Jim doesn't experience in a calendar year.
Jim held a master captain's license as the former owner of Fort Boat Tours, Inc. In the 1990's his company offered scenic boat tours of the Rock River and Lake Koshkonong aboard a 49-passenger paddle wheel replica.
As a PADI certified scuba diver, Jim has dove in large lakes and small ponds. He never went underwater without his camera and has photographed shipwrecks and many species of fish across Wisconsin.
Jim has skied down the snowy mountains of the far west and hunted wild game in the open fields of the Midwest. He regularly drives his snowmobile and ATV on thousands of miles of picturesque state trails. During the warmer months you may see Jim riding a motorcycle on the twisted, less traveled roads of Illinois and Wisconsin or find him canoe camping on a secluded river sand bar.
Jim's father bought the family a metal detector when Jim was just 12-years-old. As a youth, Jim spent many hours in back yards, city parks and under water looking for buried treasure. He learned there was a lot of history to discover and many mysteries to solve. Not only back then, but yet today.
According to Jim, the Midwest is full of treasures. And many of them are not below the ground or water. From the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes, Wisconsin and Illinois residents have a treasure chest of outdoor activities to partake in.
Jim recently retired as a circulation manager at a southern Wisconsin newspaper. Rather than become a couch potato he packed up his outdoor enthusiasm along with a camera and hit the road.
From Madison to Rockford there are interesting people to meet. From Chicago to La Crosse and all areas in between there is much to discover. Jim invites you follow him on Facebook (Furley Outdoors) as he explores the outdoor playground we all call home. He's positive you'll enjoy the ride.
